SAN LEANDRO, CA – October 19, 2005 – The National Bike Registry (NBR®), the
only nationwide bicycle registration and recovery service of its kind, is offering
police departments its 2006 Official Bike Registration Station program, a way to
protect bikes in the local community and reunite recovered stolen bicycles with
their owners. The program allows police free, 24/7 password-protected access to
the NBR registry so any bike they find can be cross-referenced to possibly find
the owner. Many owners have already recovered their bikes through the NBR service.
By becoming an NBR Official Bike Registration Station, police departments can use
NBR instead of designing and implementing their own bike registration systems, which
may be costly and time-consuming. NBR can also complement existing local bike registration
programs. NBR’s national scope enables it to work across local and state borders,
allowing police to match bikes to owners no matter where they were stolen and recovered.
Participating police departments receive an NBR Official Bike Registration window
decal, bike registration forms, posters, public relations support, bike safety materials,
and other information. This allows them to promote the program and register bikes
in their community at safety fairs, bike rodeos, rallies, and other events. Participating
police departments and events will be listed on the NBR website.
Police departments may also purchase NBR bike registration packs at the exclusive
law enforcement price of $3.50 per pack (they retail for $10) to sell, give away
to the community, or use as fund-raisers. The pack includes a 10-year NBR registration,
a tamper-resistant, serialized security label for the bike, and a bonus label that
gives the user BoomerangIt Lost & Found Return Service for cell phones, PDAs, laptops,
or other valuable gear.
“Police have a tough job in recovering property and then going out to find the rightful
owner,” said Eddie Orton, president of NBR. “We want to save police departments’
time and effort in reuniting bikes and their owners and provide them with a valuable
community service.”
“NBR is the official bicycle registration system for the nation’s most progressive
law enforcement agencies. We are working diligently to provide more information
to the community so every bike is registered,” added Orton. With the low-cost NBR
service, a bicycle owner can apply the labels obtained from an Official Bike Registration
Station or online at www.nationalbikeregistry.com and www.boomerangit.com, then
record the serial number and description of the bike in the company’s secure database
by phone, by mail, or online. Often just seeing the NBR label can deter a thief,
who knows it will be harder to resell an obviously stolen bike. The finder of a
bicycle, either the police or a Good Samaritan, calls 800-848-BIKE or accesses the
NBR website to trigger a notification to the owner. NBR is the official bicycle
registration service of the National Crime Prevention Council and McGruff® ID Armor® the Crime
Dog
