SAN LEANDRO, CA – October 18, 2005 – As bicycle theft remains steady year
after year, the National Bike Registry (NBR®), the largest and only nationwide bicycle
recovery service of its kind, is offering bicycle and general retailers a way to
help customers protect their bikes through its 2006 Official Bike Registration Station
program. The campaign gives retailers a way to provide additional services for customers
purchasing a new bicycle or returning for more bike gear. It also highlights their
stores in the local community.
The 2006 Official Bike Registration Station kit serves as its own salesperson so
the store can display the NBR service at the point-of-sale (POS) register. Retailers
promoting the bike registration and recovery service receive free sales support
materials, a POS display, which includes a NBR Official Bike Registration store
window decal, information describing the service, and public relations support to
steer customers their way and register more sales. In addition, retailers are also
listed on the NBR website.
The NBR bike registration packs for consumer purchase ($10 suggested MSRP) are available
to retailers at up to a 60 percent discount depending on quantity. The pack includes
a ten-year NBR registration, with a tamper-resistant, serialized security label
for the bike, and a BONUS label with ten-year BoomerangIt Lost & Found Return Service
for a cell phone, PDA, laptop or other gear.
“With 48 percent of stolen bikes recovered by police and only two percent returned
to their owners, a NBR serialized label makes it that much easier for the return
of the bike, said Eddie Orton, president of NBR. “NBR works with police departments
coast-to-coast, including campus police at major state universities, to identify
and return stolen bikes to their rightful owners.”
Orton added, “The NBR decal and Official Bike Registration Station designation helps
set these dealers apart from other retailers and increase store traffic and sales.
By reducing theft, and fear of theft, we’ll sell more, and better, bicycles. That’s
good for the bike industry.” Hank and Frank Bikes, with stores in Lafayette and
Oakland, Calif., was one of the first retailers to sell the NBR pack and have already
racked up hundreds of sales.
“It’s our easiest add-on sale,” said Frank Dryer, owner. “We start by letting customers
know they can now register their bikes with us. And the NBR packs are in a display
right on the counter. We believe NBR is a vital part of our community service efforts
and our customers recognize this.”
With the low-cost NBR service, a bicycle owner applies the labels purchased from
a Bike Registration Station retailer, records the serial number and description,
and registers it online. Often just seeing the NBR label can deter a thief, who
knows it will be harder to resell an obviously stolen bike. The finder of a bicycle,
either the police or a Good Samaritan, calls 800-848-BIKE or accesses the NBR website
atwww.nationalbikeregistry.com to trigger a notification to the owner. NBR is the
official bicycle registration service of the National Crime Prevention Council and
McGruff® ID Armor® the Crime Dog. Retailers that sign up as an official NBR Bike Registration
Station in October, can receive the NBR Interbike post-show special and a complimentary
NBR glass. For more details, please contact 800-848-BIKE, ext. 105.
