SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (Oct. 9, 2003) -- The National Bike Registry (NBR), a
national registration system that returns lost and stolen bicycles to their rightful
owners, has introduced a convenient new retail pack to fight bicycle theft which
is garnering the praises of law enforcement and bike retailers and their customers.
NBR, in cooperation with the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) and McGruff® ID Armor®
the Crime Dog, developed a retail pack and POP display that gives retailers the
opportunity to sell NBR registrations and provide the label in their stores. Hank
and Frank Bikes, with stores in Lafayette and Oakland, Calif., was one of the first
retailers to sell the pack and have already racked up thousands of sales.
“It’s our easiest add-on sale,” said Frank Dryer, owner. “We start by letting customers
know they can now register their bikes with us. And the NBR packs are in a display
right on the counter.” The $10 pack includes a ten-year registration with NBR, a
tamper-resistant, serialized security label, and a BONUS label that gives the user
BoomerangIt Lost & Found Service for their cell phone, PDA, laptop or whatever,
for 10 years. NBR is now powered by the proprietary registration technology of BoomerangIt.
While NBR registers bikes and scooters, BoomerangIt registers practically everything
else to facilitate the return of lost or stolen property.
“Along with a helmet and a good bike lock, NBR registration is one of the most important
accessories you can buy,” said Rodrigo von Conta, NBR spokesperson. “Bikes registered
with NBR are 10 times LESS likely to be STOLEN and 9 times MORE likely to be RETURNED.
“ “Our new retail pack offers consumers a convenient way to get a 10-year registration
and label their bike at the time they make their purchase,” added von Conta. This
program works in conjunction with the NBR’s OEM program launched with manufacturers
such as Diamondback, Giant, Raleigh and Razor, which helps raise awareness and give
retailers a starting point to sell customers on buying the full 10 year registration
from them at the time of purchase. McGruff® ID Armor® is a nationally recognized symbol of
crime prevention. Teaming up with NBR helps to spread the message throughout communities
in the U.S. and Canada and create local support to help build safer communities
and reduce crime through comprehensive crime prevention programs.
“NBR helps participating retailers provide their consumers with the added security
they need to protect their investment,” added von Conta. “Bringing in the support
of the retailers is instrumental in building safer communities and reducing crime
through comprehensive crime prevention programs. By reducing theft, and fear of
theft, we’ll sell more, and better, bicycles. That’s good for our industry.” The
pack is already available at hundreds of retail locations in North America, including
recognized retailers such as R.E.I. and also distributed by Wilson, QBP, KHS and
YaYa affiliates.
Bike theft factoids:
More than one million bikes are reported stolen each year (the actual number likely
greater).
FBI: While many types of property theft have declined; bicycle theft remains steady.
Increasing popularity of bicycling as a sport and a means of transportation have
made bicycles an easy target for thieves.
No place is bicycle theft a bigger problem than on college campuses. More that half
of the property crime in the Univ. of California system involves the theft of bicycles.
48% of stolen bikes are recovered by the police; only 5% are returned to their rightful
owner.
